Step-by-step guides to install your new Wi-Fi extender or reconnect an existing one — no technical experience needed.
Follow these steps to get your brand-new Wi-Fi extender installed and extending your network in under 15 minutes.
Place the extender halfway between your router and the area with weak signal. It must be within range of your existing Wi-Fi — ideally where you can still see 2–3 bars of signal on your phone. Avoid placing it behind large appliances or thick walls.
Plug the extender into a power outlet. Wait about 60 seconds for it to fully boot up. The power light should turn solid — this means it is ready for setup.
On your phone or laptop, open Wi-Fi settings and connect to the extender's default network — it usually looks like "ExtenderSetup," "EX-XXXX," or similar (check your extender's label). No password is needed at this stage.
Open a browser and go to the setup address printed on your extender (commonly mywifiext.net, 192.168.1.1, or ap.setup). The setup wizard will launch automatically. If nothing loads, try typing the IP address directly.
The wizard will scan and display available Wi-Fi networks. Select your home or office router network and enter your Wi-Fi password when prompted. The extender will connect to your router.
You can keep the same Wi-Fi name as your router (seamless roaming) or give it a unique name like "HomeNetwork_EXT". Once saved, move the extender to its final position and reconnect your devices to the extended network.
Lost connection after changing your router or password? Follow these steps to get back online.
Unplug the extender from the wall. Restart your main Wi-Fi router and wait for it to fully come back online (about 60 seconds). Then plug the extender back in and wait for it to boot.
Look at the LED light on the extender. A solid green or blue light means it is connected. An amber or red light means it is not connected to your router. If ambered, proceed to the next step.
If the extender cannot reconnect automatically, you may need to re-run the setup. Connect to the extender's network from your device and open its setup page (mywifiext.net or the IP on the label). Choose your Wi-Fi network and enter the password again.
If you recently changed your router's Wi-Fi password, the extender will no longer be able to connect. You must re-run setup and enter the new password. This is the most common cause of extender disconnection.
If the extender is too far from the router, it may struggle to maintain a stable connection. Try moving it closer temporarily to confirm it connects, then find the best position that still reaches the area you need coverage.
If you have a new router or changed your Wi-Fi name or password, the extender will not reconnect automatically. You must re-run the setup wizard and enter the new credentials.
Still having trouble? Here are the most common extender problems and how to fix them.
Make sure you are connected to the extender's setup network (not your home Wi-Fi). Try typing the IP address (e.g., 192.168.1.1) directly into the browser.
The extender cannot reach your router. Move it closer to the router and try again, or re-run the setup wizard.
Forget the extended network on your device and reconnect. Make sure you are entering the correct password for the extended network.
Reposition the extender closer to the router. Extenders that receive a weak signal will also broadcast a weak signal. Try to keep it where your router signal is at least 50%.
